This year is the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and as such, many towns and organizations are holding ceremonies and events to honor the lives lost. Here is a list of some local commemorations being held.
Village of Brightwaters
Saturday, Sept. 11
8:30 a.m., Ackerson Plaza
Join members of the village and help place 2,977 flags at the head of the harbor in Ackerson Plaza to honor those who died 20 years ago. Flags will be provided by the village and be handed out as you arrive.
West Islip Library
Tuesday, Sept. 14
7 p.m., 3 Higbie Lane, West Islip
This in-person event at the library will feature retired Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield employee Ken Summers, who will tell his story from 9/11. Summers was in the lobby of the North Tower and blown out of the building, suffering burns to 25 percent of his body. Summers will host a Q & A after the talk.
Bay Shore Historical Society
Thursday, Sept. 16
7 p.m., Bay Shore Brightwaters Library (22 Maple Avenue, Bay Shore)
Ken Summers will also be speaking at the monthly Bay Shore Historical Society meeting to tell his story.
East Islip Library
Saturday, Sept. 11
8:30 a.m., 381 East Main Street, East Islip
A 9/11 memorial wreath-laying and memorial service will be held in front of the library at the monument that contains a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.
Town of Islip
Saturday, Sept. 11
11 a.m., Islip Town Hall (655 Main Street, Islip)
The Town of Islip is hosting a 9/11 memorial ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in front of Town Hall.
West Islip Chamber of Commerce
Saturday, Sept. 11
8 a.m., Dorthe's Island (at the Higbie Udall merge)
The West Islip Chamber of Commerce is hosting a 9/11 tribute to honor those from the community.
St. Mark's Episcopal Church
Saturday, Sept. 11
4:30 p.m., St. Mark's (754 Montauk Highway, Islip)
St. Mark's is holding a special prayer service at 5 p.m. on 9/11. At 4:30 p.m. a gathering will take place on the church lawn as a safe space for people to share memories or take comfort with others. Church doors will open at 4:30 p.m.
