The William Floyd Home Design & Carpentry Academy, part of the district’s robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings, recently teamed up with Habitat for Humanity for a day to help with a home being constructed in Riverhead. Under the guidance of carpentry teachers Matthew Van Horne and Adam Tesoro, students worked on a shed that they constructed during the school year, which was delivered to the site the day before their visit. Students then installed house wrap and siding on the shed, then built a floor section for another larger shed on the construction site. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to get hands-on experience on a job site while pitching in for a great cause,” said Mr. Van Horne.

The William Floyd Home Design & Carpentry Academy offers a two-year program that combines hands-on skill development and technical training providing students with a basic understanding of the competencies needed to perform as an entry level carpenter, carpenter’s apprentice or carpenter’s helper. During the first year of training, students learn the fundamentals of construction and carpentry. During the second year, students continue their education about building construction occupations as well as basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning). Students must pass industry assessment in order to receive this endorsement on diploma.

The William Floyd High School CTE program is thriving and in full swing offering eight CTE program academies in a variety of interest areas, as well as five CTE Pathways in business and technology. Graduation pathways include Accounting, Architecture, Business Management, Engineering, and Microsoft Office Specialist. CTE academy offerings include Automotive, Barbering, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Home Design & Carpentry (with electrical and plumbing), Medical Assisting, along with the additions of two new CTE courses for next school year – Marine & Motorsports and Certified Personal Trainer & Nutritionist. William Floyd High School CTE is helping to build the skills necessary for students to be career and college ready and have the extra skills and know-how they can take with them throughout their lives.
