Town of Islip swears-in Peace Officers

The Town of Islip swore in a total of 6 cadet Peace Officers at a ceremony at Town Hall on Tuesday, January 4, marking the commencement of Town of Islip’s 5th Law Enforcement Academy.

The cadets will now enter Islip’s 14-week New York State certified program led by the Town’s NYS certified instructors.

To date, the Town of Islip has successfully graduated a total of 37 Peace Officers through its autonomously run program, with academies completed in November 2017, May 2019, August 2020 and February 2021.

The 2022 class, which kicked-off on 1/3/2022, includes 5 Park Ranger recruits from Islip Town and one recruit from Smithtown.

“Our robust and thorough Academy has been built from the ground up to better prepare recruits and current officers for service here in our Town and beyond, providing classroom instruction in law, ethics, communication, daily defensive tactics, as well as de-escalation, Narcan, CPR and First Aid training,” said Islip supervisor Angie Carpenter.

“We are proud of our dedicated and knowledgeable instructors for the invaluable training they provide, and of the cadets and officers who complete the training better equipped to serve the public,” Carpenter added.

In addition to training Town of Islip Park Rangers, Harbormasters, Fire Marshalls and Long Island MacArthur Airport Security Officers, the Islip program also provides NYS Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) to area peace and police officers, and is a recommended program to outside law enforcement agencies by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

“We look forward with pride to watching the Academy continue to grow as one of the ‘go to’ training facilities in the area,” said Carpenter.

The Islip program, formerly known as the Town of Islip Peace Officer Academy, has since been renamed the Town of Islip Law Enforcement Academy to accommodate Police Officers—some of whom travel across state lines from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania for the training.
