Town hosts memorial ceremony

The Town of Islip hosted a poignant 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Saturday morning.

Town board members and supervisor Angie Carpenter walked down Main Street in front of Islip Town Hall with members of the FDNY, Boy Scout troops, and bagpipe bands.

The names of all 90 victims from the Town of Islip were read out in turns by the board members while somber music played the Suffolk Emerald Society.

Ninety mini-flags were also placed around the official 9/11 memorial with names of the Islip victims inscribed.

The town also has a memorial containing a piece of twisted steel from the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

With hundreds in attendance, the tent set up spilled over on all sides with attendees to the memorial who stood proudly with the officials and listened intently to the heartfelt words of the speakers.

Nancy Nee, sister of 9/11 victim George Cain of FDNY Ladder 7, read a poem she wrote that recounted the past 20 years since that fateful day and lamented all the birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations missed by the fallen.
