Sounds of Silence Run set for Breaking the Silence for Parental Mental Health

Posted

Sounds of Silence, Friends of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York will hold its 14th annual Sounds of Silence 5K/10k Run/Walk on May 21 to raise awareness for pregnancy and postpartum depression/anxiety.

“These past two years have been a challenge for everyone’s mental health, especially for the brave mothers and fathers who are struggling in silence with a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder,” said SOS race director Erin Mascaro. “We are so excited to host our race and community event to bring people together and continue to raise awareness and support for this important cause.”

Mascaro created the race with her sister, Lisa Mary Reilly, in 2008 after Lisa suffered with depression during and following the birth of her daughter and received vital support from the Postpartum Resource Center of New York. After that experience, the sisters created a fundraising committee within PRCNY called Sounds of Silence, Friends of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York. They were joined by a founding group of friends and family who continue to be focused on raising awareness and funds so the Postpartum Resource Center of New York’s essential programs and services will be available so all New York parents to be and moms, dads and families in need of help and support will be able to receive it.

The sisters set out on a mission to break the silence of mental illness and inspire others to increase the conversation of maternal mental health awareness. They successfully grew the race each year, increasing participation and connecting families with much needed resources.

Unfortunately, Lisa succumbed to her long battle with depression in 2014. Mascaro lost another sister, Susanne, to depression in 2018.

“With all of our work and awareness of mental health, we were left asking ourselves, ‘how could this possibly happen to us?’” said Mascaro. “I made a promise to my sister to break the silence of postpartum depression and although this event is a somber reminder that mental health does not discriminate, we know our job to raise support for those struggling with depression and anxiety is more important than ever.”

Proceeds from the race benefit The Postpartum Resource Center of New York (PRCNY), which since 1998 provides perinatal mood and anxiety disorders support and education on Long Island and throughout the state. The Village of Brightwaters and Fellow Health Partners are Event Sponsors.

“We are extremely grateful to Erin Mascaro, to the Sounds of Silence fundraising committee and to the community for their continued support and commitment to break the silence and raise much needed funds so families may get the help they need for maternal and parental mental health,” said PRCNY executive director Sonia Murdock.

This year’s event features a 5K and 10K run/walk, as well as a virtual option. If you’d like to participate/sponsor, please visit https://postpartumny.org/sosrun2022/
