Scholarship winners’ art displayed

The Bay Area Friends of Fine Arts and longtime collaborating organization Women Sharing Art Inc. held an exhibit at the Gilette House in Sayville for members of the latter as well as the recipients of WSA scholarships.

Titled “The Thrill of the Moment,” artists created an entire world of their own, forging for a second in time that spanned the gamut from theatrical to forgotten.

Many moments captured were milestones in a woman’s life, like Gail Neuman’s “Button bridal bouquet” made of mixed media.

The stunning and unique bouquet is composed of “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue” and achieved by a grandmother’s buttons, a mother’s brooches, and what the artist calls “sparkly bits.”

The piece seems to carry on the tradition of women as wives, with wisdom carried down each generation to negotiate a more equal role.

In Mireille Belajonas’s two-piece art, titled “Blossom where you are planted,” the artist urges the viewer to “realize that everything is perfect, even when it’s not” and to treasure “unexpected surprises from Mother Nature.”

With grassroots inspiration, the acrylic paintings are profound, yet simple and elegant in conveying their message of self-acceptance and belonging.

The exhibit will be on display until May 26 from Thursday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
