The favorite feast with al fresco dining, food trucks, and zeppoles is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9, during the St. Liberata Fest after a parade. The celebration will continue on Main Street in Patchogue Village from noon onwards, with a bocce ball tournament and music.

This year, the village will be celebrating former Suffolk County Legis. Rob Calarco as the official Italian-American of the Year.

“Rob was an exceptional elected official for many years and a village resident who loves his community,” said Patchogue Chamber of Commerce executive director David Kennedy.

Kennedy said Calarco was also instrumental in getting the approvals to host the bocce ball tournament in front of the county courthouse many years ago.

“For that reason, and many more Rob is the perfect person for our Italian American of the Year,” he added.

Calarco is now serving as the assistant regional director for the New York State Department of Conservation (Region 1). During his time as legislator, he is most proud of the Carnegie Library’s orchestrated move from Lake Street to a county parcel of land, and rebuilding the Waverly Avenue spur in Patchogue Village. He and his wife, Laura, have three children and live in Patchogue Village.

"I am deeply touched to be named this year's Italian American of the Year, both because my Italian heritage is so important to me and because of the esteemed honorees who have come before me," Calarco said of the honor.

Also, the chamber will be seeking teams interested in participating in the bocce ball tournament. Those interested should call the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce office. About a dozen teams will participate.

The procession of the saint will start at noon on the dot, and the fourth annual zeppole-eating contest will start later in the day at 4 p.m. The winner will receive a $100 prize and all participants will get a T-shirt. There will also be a wine tour with about 10 participating restaurants. To participate, visit the chamber booth during the event.

“We are very excited; it’s one of our best events,” said Kennedy of the local event, supported by the very large Italian populations.
