Results: Local fire district elections

Votes for local fire district elections have been tallied after Islip town residents voted on Dec. 8.

The candidate with the highest votes was elected fire commissioner. The candidate will remain in that position for a five-year term, commencing Jan. 1, 2021 and ending Dec. 31, 2025. The results are below.

BAY SHORE

Incumbent Richard O. Christie defeated newcomer Jeremiah Rockfeld in a contested race for the five-year fire commissioner seat. Christie received 142 votes, while Jeremiah Rockfeld only received 82 votes.

EAST ISLIP

Eric Slynn, who ran unopposed this year, was elected fire commissioner of the East Islip fire district. A volunteer with the department did not disclose the total number of votes he received.

ISLIP

Owen McCaffery, who has held the fire commissioner position for several years, was once again voted into the role. He ran unopposed.

ISLIP TERRACE

Three new fire commissioners will join the Islip Terrace Fire Department this year after a total 58 votes were cast. All candidates ran unopposed.

Bart Gugel will serve as fire commissioner for one five-year term, while Walter J. Westhoff will take the vacant four-year-long seat. Thomas Chance will occupy the 3-year seat.

WEST ISLIP

Joe Bedalla was selected as fire commissioner after he received the top number of votes. Bedalla ran unopposed in West Islip this year.
