Raising awareness of postpartum depression and anxiety

On Saturday, May 21, the 14th annual Sounds of Silence 5K/10K run/walk/stroller walk was held at Walker Beach in Brightwaters. Sounds of Silence raises awareness for pregnancy and postpartum depression and anxiety. Funds raised from the event benefit the Postpartum Resource Center of New York, which provides perinatal mood and anxiety disorders support and education on Long Island and throughout the state. The race was created by Erin Mascaro and sister Lisa Mary Reilly in 2008 after Reilly experienced depression during and following the birth of her daughter and received support from the Postpartum Resource Center of New York. Unfortunately, Reilly succumbed to her long battle with depression in 2014. Mascaro lost another sister, Susanne, to depression in 2018. This annual fundraiser allows Long Island and New York State parents-to-be, moms, dads, and families to receive much-needed, non-judgmental and confidential support, and the help they need for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders including drop-in virtual Take Care of You support meetings and health care and support resources. If you or someone you know are in need of help, reach out to the Postpartum Resource Center of New York’s Toll-Free Statewide Helpline 855-631-0001 pospartony.org.
