Legis. Anthony Piccirillo (R-8th District) was elected majority whip by fellow Republicans in the Suffolk County Legislature earlier this month.
Piccirillo has served as the eighth district’s legislator since being elected in 2019 and winning reelection in 2023.
This past holiday season, Piccirillo’s office ran a successful Holiday Toy Drive that resulted in a donation of hundreds of gifts for children served by ECLI-VIBES.
The majority whip position’s name derives from the fox-hunting term “whipper-in”—referring to the member of the hunting team responsible for keeping the dogs from straying from the team during a chase.
Traditionally serving as assistant leaders, whips are mainly responsible for counting heads and rounding up party members for votes and quorum calls, and they occasionally stand in for the majority or minority leaders in their absence.
