St. John’s Church in Oakdale held its annual “Salute to Our Armed Forces”—a tribute and laying of wreaths to honor the service of past heroes.

Researched and led by Town of Islip historian George Munkenbeck, the event reminded attendees of the great sacrifice of servicemembers from centuries past.

Reenactors of the 67th Regiment (Civil War, Union soldiers) were on hand to provide a full military salute in reverence to the fallen. Reenactors from the Sons of the Revolution were also in attendance and Munkenbeck is continuing his research on gravesites of the Revolutionary War veterans in Islip Town.

The purpose of the event was to honor those whose final resting place is in St. John’s Cemetery.
