Jasper Gender: male Jasper is a 1-year-old male, neutered domestic shorthair. He was surrendered to us from a hoarding situation. He is good with cats and just a purr muffin!

Midnight Gender: male Midnight is a 4-year-old male, neutered, DSH. He had a urinary blockage and was surrendered to an animal hospital. Surgery was performed and he is good as gold! He is a sweet, snuggly guy.

Bonnie Gender: female Breed: mix Color: black and white Bonnie is a 3-year-old female spayed pittie mix. She was rescued from a neglectful situation. She is a cuddle bug, prefers to be the only pet in the home, and good with kids 10 and up.

Bertha Gender: female Breed: mix Color: red and white She was found as a stray by a good Samaritan who brought her here to the shelter in hopes of finding her family. She is sweet, energetic and looking for her place in this world. She is about 5 to 7 years young, 55 pounds, up to date on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped and heartworm negative.

Bentley Gender: male Breed: mix Color: white/brown Bentley is a happy, outgoing, and playful guy who is looking for a love connection. He was surrendered because his family was moving and they were not able to take him with them. He is easy to leash up and take out for a walk. Bentley loves attention and getting lots of pets, especially belly rubs. He absolutely loves balls or toys; he will throw them in the air and entertain himself and will make a wonderful companion. Bentley is 79 pounds, 6 years young, up to date on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped and heartworm negative.

Brookhaven Animal Shelter is home to many animals, including 74 dogs, 94 cats, as well as some Guinea pigs that are all looking for a family that will take care of them and give them the love that they are looking for. Many people find that looking for their next fluffy family member have difficulties because of the cost a new pet can have. However, in February, the shelter has a promotion to help more of their animals that they are caring for.

“There is free adoptions for any animal that’s been here longer than six months… that includes all the spay/neuter, the heartworm test, or feline leukemia and AIDs test if it’s a cat. Vaccines, deworming, and any other medical that was needed and a microchip,” said Linda Klampfl, shelter supervisor.

The normal adoption fee is $137 for dogs and between $130 to $140 for cats any other month of the year.

The number of dogs and cats that are at the shelter is always changing due to adoptions, but also because the shelter takes in multiple animals in a day.

“We get strays, people have been evicted, houses have been condemned, we get hoarding houses, we get owner surrenders,” she said.

Klampfl has a big responsibility being appointed as Brookhaven Animal Shelter’s supervisor in June 2023, as she has a duty to oversee the staff as well as all adoptions at the animal shelter. She is also currently the president of Almost Home, a private not-for-profit shelter located in Patchogue.

Brookhaven Animal Shelter is located in North Bellport at 300 Horseblock Road and is open seven days a week and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays; they are open from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

This February promotion brings a bit more hope to the possibility of helping more animals, as Klampfl stated that they do see a slight increase in adoptions during this month compared to the rest of the year. This slight uptick gets them one more step towards their ultimate goal.

“Our goal is to find forever families for the animals that come into the shelter,” she added.
