On Tuesday, Dec. 21 at the monthly Oakdale Historical Society meeting, the organization honored a group of Girl Scouts from local Troop 2798.
The four young ladies, Amanda Bast, Ava Guiney, Jessica Bast and Sydney Stylianos, under direction of their leader, Liz Stylianos, and co-leader, Corinn Kraemer, were awarded for their completing OHS’s “THE QUEST.”
Developed by OHS as a family-friendly activity designed to help participants learn about the rich history of Oakdale while having interactive fun, THE QUEST has long helped foster a care and honor of history in younger generations.
In THE QUEST, there are 10 historical sites throughout Oakdale that are highlighted. Participants must visit each site and interact with the exhibit.
After visiting the site, the participants must answer questions, design or sketch, offer an opinion, or take a selfie relating to the specific historical marker.
Included in THE QUEST are 10 of the most fascinating historical locations in Oakdale, of which there are boundless, including: East and West gate houses of Idle Hour, Vanderbilt Idle Hour mansion, Artist Colony, Second Pond (Byron Lake Park), Bourne Mansion (Indian Neck Hall), St. John’s Historic Church and Cemetery, Jacob Ockers House, Oakdale Railroad Station and Southside Sportsman’s Club.
The booklet is on sale for $10
After successfully completing THE QUEST, participants are gifted a one-year Junior Membership to OHS, a logo decal, and a certificate of completion.
The four Girl Scouts spent the spring and summer visiting the ten sites and learning about Oakdale’s rich historical saga.
Legis. Anthony Piccirillo (R-District 8) presented the Girl Scouts with citations from the Suffolk County Legislature for their achievement in earning their merit badges.
“The Scouts are so important for our young people to build a sense of character and camaraderie. In teaming with the Oakdale Historical Society, it was a great endeavor of bridging the historical caretakers for the next generation,” said Piccirillo, adding, “The history of Long Island is so important to impart on our children, and the hamlet of Oakdale especially has a vibrant, rich history.”
