Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers helped rescue three kayakers from Captree State Park in Bay Shore on Monday  August 16.

Marine Juliette responded to Captree State Park following a 911 call reporting kayakers in the water at approximately 3:10 p.m., police said. Brian Consey was kayaking when his vessel capsized near a dock. Two family members, Steven and Debra Leonardo, attempted to aid Consey when their kayak also overturned. All three were clinging to the pilings under the dock when Marine Bureau and NY State Park Police officers, as well as the United States Coast Guard, arrived on scene.

Marine Bureau Officer Chris Maggio went into the water to assist Debra Leonardo safely through the strong current and out from under the dock. The pair swam with the current until they were able to safely pull themselves onto Marine Juliette at approximately 3:30 p.m. US Coast Guard and NY State Park Police officers were able to rescue Steven Leonardo off the piling. Consey, with the assistance of law enforcement officers and good Samaritans on the dock, was able to climb to safety.

Police said Steven Leonardo , 61, of North Babylon, Debra Leonardo, 57, of North Babylon, and Consey, 55, of Farmingville, were evaluated on scene by Islip Rescue and declined further medical treatment.
