On Memorial Day, May 30, the Islip Memorial Day parade and tribute ceremony was held along Main Street and ended at Veterans Memorial Park by Town Hall. This year’s grand marshal was U.S. Army veteran Willfried E. Affelt, who has lived in Islip Terrace since moving from Germany. According to pamphlets handed out at the ceremony, Affelt joined the Army on Nov. 6, 1953, and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He received training as a gunner and was assigned to Battery B, 66th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. Affelt was promoted to SP3(T) on July 1, 1955. On Nov. 4, 1955, Affelt was honorably separated from active duty at Fort Hood, Texas. Affelt completed eight years in the Reserves in November of 1961. Affelt joined Rusy-Bohm Post 411 American Legion in 1992.
A beautiful rendition of the national anthem was sung at the ceremony by Islip High School senior Isabella Green. Roses were laid by Unit 411Auxiliary and Junior Auxiliary in front of the monument in the park for those from the Town of Islip who lost their lives serving. Many elected officials spoke at the ceremony, including NYS Sen. Phil Boyle, Suffolk County Legis. Steve Flotteron, Islip Town supervisor Angie Carpenter, Islip Town councilman James P. O’Connor, and New York State assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo.
