Islip School District residents are invited to attend a Zoom community forum Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. to discuss the search for a new district superintendent of schools.

Current superintendent Ellen Semel, who has been with the district for nearly 15 years, is set to retire at the end of this academic year effective June 30, 2021. The Islip Board of Education unanimously approved her resignation at the Oct. 13 school board meeting.

School board president Philip Dineen said that selecting the district’s next superintendent of schools is “a charge that we take very seriously.” The district has partnered with Eastern Suffolk BOCES to conduct the search process, Dineen said.

The Dec. 2 webinar, where residents can speak, is intended to “discuss the characteristics and qualities that we collectively seek in our next leader,” Dineen said.

He noted that the webinar, which will be moderated by Eastern Suffolk BOCES chief operating officer Julie Davis Lutz, is an important first step in the process.

“It is the board of education’s hope that this process will be a collaborative one and provide our stakeholders direct opportunities to share suggestions about the future of the Islip School District,” he said.
