Hydraulic oil spill at the Four Corners

Posted

On the morning of Monday, July 31, there was a major hydraulic oil spill in the Four Corners area of Brightwaters Village. The spill stemmed from a Winters Brothers Garbage Truck.
“The truck malfunctioned and they spilled probably 100 gallons of hydraulic fluid from Hiawatha Drive down to Union Boulevard,” shared Highway Foreman Mike Gralton. “It took about four and a half to five hours [to clean up the spill].”
The Four Corners, a small commercial district at the intersection of Orinoco Drive and North Windsor Avenue, was shut down with the roads closed during the clean-up. With the hydraulic oil also spilling onto nearby train tracks, the LIRR trains schedule was also impacted by the spill.
About a dozen agencies arrived at the scene to help clean up the hydraulic fluid. Among these agencies were the Bay Shore Fire Department, Bay Shore Brightwaters EMS, Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, Suffolk County Hazmat Team, Town of Islip Hazmat Team, Brentwood Legion Ambulance, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Suffolk County Sheriff's Department, Suffolk County Police Department, and more. Following the clean-up efforts, the area is now safe and secure.
