South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore has unveiled a $2 million cardiothoracic office which will offer cardiac and thoracic care within hospital walls, officials announced last week.
The new, 2,000-square-foot cardiac ambulatory suite, which took six months to construct, is located on the first floor of the hospital, part of Northwell Health. It has the capacity to handle 2,00 patient visits per year, according to a press release.
“This new facility... gives us the opportunity to not only be the premier cardiothoracic facility on the South Shore, but a one-stop shop destination for our patients,” said Dr. Robert Kalimi, chairman of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at SSUH. “Having three world-class cardiothoracic physicians also allows us to strengthen our relationship with the community by increasing patient access to world-class heart surgeries.”
The new space offers patients a variety of onsite preand post-operative care for procedures that include coronary artery bypass, minimally invasive valve repair and replacement, aortic pathology and catheter-based valve repair and replacement procedures.
Dr. Kalimi – along with chief of cardiac surgery Dr. John Goncalves, and attending cardiac surgeon Dr. Syed Hussain – will work out of the office along with nine staff members specially trained in cardiothoracic medicine.
Northwell Health, the state’s largest health care provider and private employer, has invested $470.4 million to improve the hospital’s infrastructure and strengthen its clinical and technological capabilities over the last decade, including numerous physician recruitments that have established SSUH as Northwell’s Suffolk County tertiary hospital.
