June is Pride Month, when the world’s LGBT communities gather with their allies for equality and to celebrate the freedom that they have to be themselves and to live their authentic lives openly, with the same rights as all other citizens, and Patchogue was pleased to affirm this positive message of unity and equality, on Sunday, June 4, beginning at noon on Main Street for Patchogue’s first Pride parade.
Patchogue Pride’s first grand marshal was Cheryl Felice. Now a Bellport resident, Felice was born and raised in Patchogue and has seen the community change for the better when it comes to LGBT acceptance. Her mayoral candidacy for the Village of Patchogue, in 1996, was stymied when detractors in the race outed her for being gay, effectively ending her campaign, so this is truly coming full circle for Felice and the Village of Patchogue.
