Eight wrestlers from our area will be in Albany on Thursday, Feb. 27, competing in the first-ever girls state wrestling tournament sanctioned by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
All eight wrestle for the Bellport unified team, which includes wrestlers from seven area high schools: Bayport-Blue Point, Bellport, Longwood, Patchogue-Medford, Riverhead, Sayville and William Floyd.
The team went 6-2 in dual meets and was Suffolk County dual meet co-champion. They went on to finish first in last weekend’s county tournament.
Here are the eight wrestlers who will be competing in Albany:
“I feel really optimistic,” coach Joe Scioli said of his team’s chances. “The girls put in a lot of hard work and I’m looking forward to seeing them capitalize on their hard work. They’re excited to be making history.”
Two other wrestlers from our area will be competing in the boys state wrestling tournament in Albany, which starts on Friday, Feb. 28.
They are Bellport High School freshman Camryn Howard (138 pounds), who pinned his opponent in 11 seconds to win his third-consecutive Suffolk championship, and William Floyd High School’s Josiah Lors at 215 pounds.
Lors is the 10th county champion in William Floyd history and the first since John Barone in 2004, coach Tony Mecca said.
In addition, Jack Meyer, of William Floyd, won the Spartan Award as the most outstanding wrestler in League I. Meyer, a junior, already has 100 career wins.
Bellport finished the regular season in first place in Division 1, undefeated at 5-0.
William Floyd finished third in League I at 4-2, according to the Section XI website.
Pat-Med’s wrestling team also saw a lot of success this season.
The Raiders finished the regular season in first place in League I at 6-0.
Two Raiders wrestlers—Aiden Morin and Mason Jacobellis—were named all-county.
Morin finished sixth in the county tournament at 108 pounds. Jacobellis, a senior, finished third at 124 pounds. He was named all-county for the fourth-consecutive year. The only other wrestler in Pat-Med history to reach this mark was Artie Weidler, who graduated in 1998, Pat-Med wrestling coach Tom Anello said.
