Annual cross bay swim set for this week

The Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay Swim will be held on Thursday, July 14, with a rain date of Friday, July 15. The 5.5-mile open-water swim begins at the Fire Island Lighthouse and concludes at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters. According to the organization’s website, the swim was first established in 1927. In 1999, the event was renamed for Maggie Fischer, who was registered to swim that year but tragically died before the event.

According to the event’s website, “Today the event is limited to about 130 participants who come from around the country to be in a friendly but serious competition, considered one of the safest and best-run events of its kind.”

In 2021, the swim raised funds to distribute $94,000 to Hospice Children and Family Bereavement Services and $20,000 to the Maggie Fischer Scholarship at St. Anthony’s High School.
