Rev up those engines, because the seasonal Kiwanis car show is coming to Bay Shore this month.
Kiwanis Club of the Islips-Bay Shore’s car show, a decade-long display of new and old vehicles for motorheads of all ages, returns this season to the Suffolk Transportation Services site located at 50 Saxon Avenue on Sunday, May 16.
The socially distanced charity event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with all proceeds benefiting Kiwanis outreach for children, local veterans, essential workers, Pronto of Long Island food pantry and more.
Sandy Flandina, president of the local Kiwanis chapter, said funds will also help the high school scholarship fund, which donates five scholarships to students in Islip, Islip Terrace, East Islip, Central Islip and Brentwood school districts.
The car show’s pull is the competition – where the “Best in Show” whip will receive a $100 prize. Three additional trophies will be distributed for “People’s Choice” awards. Entry to the car show is free for spectators and entering a vehicle in the competition is $20.
The outdoor event will feature live music from Long Island cover band Astoria Revival, a giant 50/50 raffle, a food truck, and plenty of raffles for the nonprofit, Flandina said.
“If the public is interested in doing charitable work, they can come by and be involved in our Chinese raffles,” Flandina said. “We do a number of fundraisers that help the community.”
East Islip resident Flandina said this year the local group has roughly 15 sponsors, including Overton Funeral Home of Islip, Little Angels Center of Blue Point, Legis. Tom Cilmi’s office, and more. A top sponsor this year is Good Samaritan Hospital, who donated $1,000 to the charity.
The last car show took place in October 2020. At past shows, Flandina said, the club raised $10,000. Despite the pandemic, he said the group aims to meet that same goal this season.
“Please join in helping the Kiwanis club and those in need and supporting our charitable organizations,” Flandina added. “Feel good while doing good.”
Kiwanis Club of the Islips-Bay Shore, formed in 1986, serves the Islip, East Islip, West Islip, Islip Terrace, Central Islip and Bay Shore communities.
