There were 97 swimmers and an equal number of kayakers that headed out into the water near the Fire Island Lighthouse to begin the annual Maggie Fischer Memorial Cross Bay Swim to the Brightwaters beach on the mainland. The much anticipated event is an 88-year-old tradition on the Great South Bay.

Islip’s new deputy supervisor

Bill Mannix, Director of Economic Development for the Town of Islip, has stepped into a new role that was previously held by John Carney, Commissioner of Public Safety. This is not Mannix’s first time in the position though. He served as deputy supervisor for a brief period in 2006.

Last Friday, 97 swimmers and an equal number of kayakers headed into the water near the Fire Island Lighthouse and began a swimming competition that has been around for 88 years: the annual Cross Bay Swim, which began in 1927.
