This Monday, May 27, is the official date to acknowledge Memorial Day this year. There are a number of events planned across our reader areas, where those who paid the ultimate price for freedom are honored. Here are the locations for those events.

Bay Shore

The 94th annual Bay Shore-Brightwaters Memorial Day Parade—this year honoring the end of WWI—begins at 9 a.m. with a service at Memorial Park at the Bay Shore train station. The Hibernian Festival Singers will perform and Bay Shore students will play taps.

The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. It begins at the Newins Bay Shore Ford dealership on Main Street and St. Patrick’s schoolyard and then proceeds east to Brentwood Road. The parade will then head north on Brentwood Road to Oakwood Cemetery on the corner of Moffitt Boulevard.

East Islip-Islip

This year’s Memorial Day parade is being sponsored by American Legion 4S Post, which is located on Main Street in East Islip

The parade will commence at 10:30 a.m. at Greenwood Avenue in East Islip (bowling alley) and will proceed west to Islip Town Memorial Park (next to Town Hall, Islip), where a ceremony and wreath-laying will be held.

West Islip

At 8:15 a.m., the West Islip Historical Society is holding a ceremony and wreath-laying at the Weeks-Muncey Cemetery on Boulevard Avenue, where two Revolutionary War soldiers are buried.

At 8 a.m., American Legion Post 1738 will hold a prayer service in front of West Islip High School to honor the 11 hometown heroes that never made it back from the Vietnam War.

The parade gathers at the corner of Rodrick and Udall Road at 10 a.m. It kicks off at 10:30 a.m. and proceeds south to Higbie Lane, where it will make a stop for a prayer service and wreath-laying at the memorial at the intersection of Udall and Higbie.

Continuing south, the parade ends at the John J. Bellew School, where a ceremony and wreath-laying will take place. After the service, the Post will hold an open house that everyone is invited to attend.
