BAY SHORE—Roshni Singh was not the favorite heading into the Suffolk County Championships, despite being the defending county champion. Having lost to Commack’s Fiona McLoughlin in a triangular meet back in early October and again at the Division Championships later on that month, Roshni had something to prove to everyone and to herself. And that she most certainly did.

As the race unfolded, Roshni went right to the front and set a blistering pace, and no one could go with the Bay Shore junior. The lead would grow as the runners hit “Cardiac Hill.”  Coming through the picnic area with about 1000 meters to go, Roshni had a 25-second lead. She would continue to run hard through the finish line to run a very fast pb of 18:54.54, to become only the third Bay Shore girl ever to break the 19-minute barrier at the demanding 5000-meter course at Sunken Meadow. Only Laura Cummings, 18:15.23 (2002), and Kathy Pitcher, 18:52.9 (1984), have broken that barrier, and both girls were also Suffolk County champions. Cummings won three times. Other Bay Shore county champions have been Melissa Malakoff, Callie Hogan and Kim Moran.

Jordyn McDonnell (Sachem North) ran 19:20.94, Melissa Merone (Sachem East), 19:33.25, Fiona McLoughlin (Commack), 19:47.14, Josephine Critchley (West Babylon), 19:54.42, and Kaitlyn DeYulio (Commack), 19:55.61, would round out the top six in the county, and all these girls qualified for the state championships. Bay Shore’s team would place fifth in the team scoring in a very competitive meet.

On any given day, any of the top five teams could beat each other. Sydney Carpenter has had a terrific season in 2018, but was not 100 percent on that day, but battled to place 25th with a time of 21:01.96. Catie Surian ran 21:41.48 to place 40th. Keda Zepherin was 47th, running 21:58.58. Right behind her in 48th place was sophomore Zoe Feigel, who ran a pb 21:59.58. Brianna Christie was 61st, running 22:36.47. Senior Sabrina Simonetti was 66th with a time of 22:43.69.

Top 10 team scores: 1. Sachem East 88; 2. Smithtown 108; 3. Commack 121; 4. Ward Melville 127; 5. Bay Shore 150; 6. Riverhead 191; 7. West Babylon 191; 8. Eastport-South Manor 194; 9. Sachem North 200; 10. East Islip 229.
