We are one
Our country has recently been fiercely divided on a number of political and social issues, at times seemingly perched at the threshold of chaos. However, this week we all got a wake-up call from an event in our past – Sept. 11, 2001. The date says it all.
There’s a stir of emotions on that day that unites fellow Americans. They recall the feeling of horror, the shared sorrow, as well as the vulnerability and uncertainty about the future. This past Tuesday was indeed a sobering reminder of what could happen to any one of us at any time and what could happen to our country. On that day, we remembered that despite all of our differences, we are one.
The day after the 17th anniversary of the attacks, our lives as we’ve known them resumed, and the sadness and apprehension many no doubt re-experienced faded away for yet another year. Not dwelling on a painful past seems to be the best way to continue moving forward. But it’s important to always keep in mind that there was that time not so long ago when we closely relied on one another to heal, united in concern for ourselves and for our nation. And we must never forget the individuals who will always remind us of that. Ninety of them were our neighbors from Islip Town:
