Redmen’s season ends
EAST ISLIP—Sunday evening marked a big rematch between the Sayville and East Islip varsity football teams for the Long Island Class III Championship game at LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook. Ultimately, the Golden Flashes (11-0) defeated the Redmen (9-2) by a score of 21-7.
Sayville’s star quarterback Jack Coan ran for three first-half touchdowns while garnering 107 passing yards and 63 rushing yards. East Islip did a much better job containing him than their previous matchup last month, when Coan rushed for 309 yards and had three touchdown passes in a 49-17 win. It was the only game this season where he did not throw a touchdown pass.
However, East Islip had trouble generating offense most of the game and were held to just 174 total yards by Sayville’s defense. Their best chance to jump back in the game came when cornerback Kyle Nunez blocked a punt by Coan in the third quarter. With a golden opportunity to score some points, East Islip ultimately failed to make it into the end zone after quarterback Kyle Fleitman threw four straight incompletions from the 9-yard line. Their only score came in the fourth quarter with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Fleitman to John Sihpol with just over four minutes left in the game.
Both of East Islip’s two losses for the season came against Sayville, and they will have to wait until next year for another rematch.
