WEST ISLIP—The West Islip varsity football team defeated the Bellport Clippers by a score of 35-6 in a Suffolk Division II matchup Saturday afternoon that brought the Lions to a 3-0 record.
After forcing a three-and-out on the opening drive, the Lions swiftly drove 70 yards down the field, scoring on a 13-yard touchdown run by senior tight end Mike Lombardi. Soon after, Lombardi forced a fumble that was returned by James McCorvey, making the score 14-0 within the game’s first six minutes. Lombardi rushed for 132 yards and had a touchdown on 15 carries. He also had two sacks and a fumble recovery.
In the last minute of the second quarter, quarterback Connor Smith made a 32-yard touchdown pass to Pat Malcahy. Smith finished with 2-for-3 passing for 84 yards and two touchdowns, plus 130 yards rushing on 12 carries. The score was 35-0 by halftime. The only score of the second half was a touchdown catch by Bellport’s James Morrell, though West Islip narrowly missed a field goal in the third quarter and ended the game kneeling down just before the goal line.
While the Lions finished a disappointing 1-7 last season, five of those losses were decided by just a touchdown or less. Four of those losses were also decided in late-game situations. The Clippers have made the playoffs every year in the past decade, but are currently winless at 0-3.
West Islip will visit Huntington on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.
