West Islip Public Schools have been mandated to close Bayview Elementary School for 24 hours, beginning Thursday, March 12, since a staff member at school tested positive for coronavirus. For cautionary purposes, West Islip Public Schools’ entire district is closed for Thursday, at the very least, according to a letter disseminated by superintendent Bernadette Burns. Districtwide, all activities have been canceled.

“The need for additional closures beyond Thursday will be determined after consultation with the Suffolk County Department of Health Services,” Burns wrote to students’ parents and guardians.

Each school building today is being disinfected in accordance with guidelines from the New York State Department of Health.

“We have brought in a professional cleaning service for Bayview Elementary School and will use our custodial staff to deep clean all other buildings,” Burns wrote, continuing on to say that this is all in anticipation to reopen schools on Friday, March 13.

The letter also listed the recommended directions for everyone disseminated by the Centers for Disease Control: wash hands and lather for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating; avoid close contact with sick individuals; refrain from touching face (eyes, nose, mouth) as much as possible; call in sick, if you are; cough and sneeze into tissue and proceed to discard tissue; and regularly disinfect often-touched objects and surfaces.

“We will continue to keep you updated about further developments and direction from the [CDC] and the [NYSDOH],” the letter concluded.
