Brightwaters residents show support for healthcare workers

Posted

Health care workers, first respond- ers, and all essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic have been supported in various ways around the country and in various communities. The Village of Brightwaters and its residents have put together a Field of Honor at the top of the Brightwaters Canal.

Abutting Montauk Highway is a field of lawn signs that each express “thank you” in artistic manners to everyone risking their lives to maintain local necessities, including those on the front lines in hospitals, first responders, and the workers who continue to show up for work.

The Field of Honor was erected on Wednesday, April 22, and dozens more signs have been added since then. Former village trustee Bernadette Whitwell is responsible for the idea at the top of the Brightwaters Canal, and several trustees as well as residents take credit for putting the idea to action. A letter disseminated on Facebook by the Village of Brightwaters thanked those who were directly involved and everyone who contributed signs.

“It is truly amazing to see the community come together in support of our health care workers, first responders and all essential workers,” the letter reads. “[We extend] a big thank you to all the children and families who shared their artistic abilities on the lawn signs for all to see.”

The signs will remain in place for however long the fight against COVID-19 lasts.
